Abstract |
This FAQ is answered by Dr. Vivek Navale. Dr. Navale is the Information Technology Chief for the US National Archives and Records and Administration (NARA) where he manages a program involving preservation and access of electronic records. The longevity of digital storage media has long been a subject of interest to librarians and archivists. In recent years, there has been no single, comprehensive source of information on media longevity, but a number of agencies have been conducting studies on specific media types. In this FAQ, Dr. Navale presents an overview of three studies that have looked at the life expectancy of high density magnetic tape, CD-ROMs and recordable CDs and DVDs. |
